Boat across the lake

The boat service across Lake Bohinj leaves from the pier at Ribčev Laz, at the eastern end of the lake, and it is one of the most pleasant ways to see the lake and its setting. Lake Bohinj is the largest permanent natural lake in Slovenia, a deep, clear glacial lake framed on three sides by steep forested slopes and, beyond them, the high walls of the Julian Alps. The boats, quiet and electric-powered, glide over the water without engine noise or fumes, so the visitor can enjoy the silence broken only by the sound of the water and the call of birds, and the approach is in keeping with the protected setting of the surrounding national park.

The boats run to the village of Ukanc at the western end of the lake, a crossing that takes some time, and the passengers can enjoy the view from the open deck. As the boat moves along, the scenery changes: the church and bridge at Ribčev Laz fall behind, the meadows and hayracks of the shore appear, and the mountains rise ahead, with the peaks reflected in calm water on a still day. On board, a commentary explains the ecology of the lake, local legends such as that of Zlatorog, the golden-horned chamois, and the history of the valley, which adds to the interest of the trip. The boats are named after local symbols, Zlatorog and Triglavska roža, the Triglav rose, an alpine flower.

The service runs in the warmer part of the year, from spring to autumn, with several departures per day, and passengers can buy a one-way or a return ticket. A one-way journey allows visitors to go on to other places: at Ukanc, they can walk to Slap Savica Waterfall, ride the Vogel cable car or follow trails along the shore, and then return on foot along the lake path or by boat. A return trip is a simple way to enjoy the view without exertion. Because the number of seats is limited, it is wise to buy tickets in advance during the busy summer months, and weather can affect the timetable, so check conditions before going.

The pier at Ribčev Laz is easy to reach from the village, and nearby are the Church of Saint John the Baptist, with its medieval frescoes and its famous picture-postcard view, and the statue of Zlatorog by the shore. The boat ride is well suited to families with children and to visitors who want a relaxed way to see the lake. Early morning offers calm water and fewer people, and late afternoon gives warm light on the mountains.
