Akvarij Piran, the aquarium of Piran, is a small marine museum on the seafront of the old town, a short distance along the coast from Portorož. It is dedicated to the life of the northern Adriatic, and since the sea is just outside the door, it makes a natural stop for families on a day by the water. It sits close to the research institutions that study the Slovenian coast, which gives it a scientific background, and the tanks are designed to introduce visitors to the animals and plants that live in the shallow, warm waters of the gulf.

The displays follow the habitats of the Adriatic. Tanks with rocky reefs hold the fish that visitors may meet while snorkelling, such as bream, wrasse, sea bass and gobies, and others hold stranger creatures, among them octopus, scorpion fish, moray eels and crabs. Seahorses, which live in the seagrass meadows of the coast, are often among the favourites with children, and there are tanks with sponges, sea anemones, starfish and other invertebrates that look more like plants than animals. Some tanks show species from warmer seas, giving a sense of the diversity of marine life in the world, though the main focus is on the Mediterranean and Adriatic.

The aquarium is small, and a visit usually takes an hour or so, which makes it easy to fit into a day in Piran. It works especially well with children, who can press their noses against the glass and ask the staff about what they see, and it is a pleasant refuge from the midday sun or a summer shower. Piran itself is a delight to walk around. The aquarium lies close to the harbour, and from there you can reach Tartini Square, the Bell Tower of the parish church and the narrow lanes of the old town on foot.
