Vintgar Gorge (Blejski Vintgar)

Vintgar Gorge, known locally as Blejski Vintgar, is a striking natural monument located just four kilometers northwest of Lake Bled, serving as the gateway to Triglav National Park. This 1,600-meter-long glacial canyon, which plunges up to 250 meters deep, is Slovenia’s largest natural monument and the country’s first protected natural attraction. Discovered 130 years ago by three adventurers, the gorge is carved by the Radovna River and hosts over 600 plant species, making it a biodiversity hotspot within the Julian Alps.

Visitors typically spend over three hours exploring the gorge via an organized, guarded path that has been in place since 1893. The route features sturdy wooden bridges anchored directly into the rock face, leading to the impressive Šum Waterfall, which drops 15 meters. To ensure preservation, access is strictly limited, and prior reservations are essential to avoid being turned away. The journey is one-way, ending at the waterfall, after which guests can return to the VINTGAR Visitor Centre via thematic trails, such as the historically themed "King of Triglav Trail," which offers views of the Alpine cultural landscape and access to audio guides.

For families, specific paths like the "Trail of Oskar Kos and his friends" provide engaging options for children. Access is restricted to cars; visitors must park at the official free VINTGAR LIP lot and utilize the shuttle e-bus to reach the entrance. Whether joining an organized group or taking an individual tour with an audio guide, the experience offers a unique glimpse into Slovenia’s natural heritage, combining geological wonder with well-maintained infrastructure.
