River of Trees Trail

The Vintgar Gorge, near Bled in the Gorje district of Upper Carniola, is one of the best-known natural sights in Slovenia: a narrow, winding canyon cut by the Radovna River, where a long wooden walkway follows the river over rapids, pools and rock walls to the Šum waterfall at the far end. The gorge was opened to the public in the 1890s after local people recognised its beauty and built the first paths and bridges, and it has been a popular excursion ever since. The River of Trees Trail is a forest walk in the same area that offers a quieter, more reflective way to experience the landscape.

Where the main gorge path runs at the level of the water, a forest trail climbs through the woods above and looks at the setting from a different angle. The idea behind a trail of this kind is to introduce visitors to the living forest around the river, the beech, spruce and pine, the undergrowth and the animals that live among them, and to the relationship between the trees and the water that shaped the valley. The gorge has practical points to note. It is very popular in summer, and arriving early in the morning or late in the afternoon avoids the largest crowds. The area is closed or restricted in winter when ice makes the boardwalks unsafe. Good shoes, a light rain layer and a little time for the information stops make the trail more rewarding.
