Vinica Castle

Vinica is a small village on the Kolpa River in Bela Krajina, the south-eastern corner of Slovenia, where the river forms the border with Croatia. The Kolpa here is wide and unhurried, and in summer it is one of the warmest rivers in the country, popular for swimming, canoeing and fishing. The village is best known as the birthplace of the poet Oton Župančič, one of the central figures of Slovene literature, and its Župančič Museum keeps his memory alive. Vinica Castle stands in this setting, above the river and overlooking its gardens and the hills across the water.

The castle is a modest historic residence rather than a large fortress, and today it is used as a place to stay and a venue for events. The old building has been renovated with an emphasis on natural materials, and guests stay in apartments that look out onto the gardens and the valley. Because details of its early history are hard to verify, the castle is best appreciated as part of the landscape: a small seat of the kind that once stood along the Kolpa, a frontier region shaped by Habsburg rule, Ottoman raids in earlier centuries and centuries of trade across the river.

Bela Krajina itself rewards slow exploration. The name means White Carniola and is often explained by the white bark of the birch trees that grow widely in the region. The area is known for traditions such as decorated Easter eggs, the folk costume of the White Carniolans, and the Jurjevanje festival held in Črnomelj each spring. Nearby towns such as Metlika and Črnomelj have old centres, wine cellars and local specialities, among them the sweet bread known as belokranjska pogača and the wines of the region.

The Kolpa is the main outdoor attraction. Visitors swim from gravel banks, hire canoes, cycle along the riverside paths and walk in the surrounding woods, which are quiet and green. The landscape is gentle, with low hills and small villages, and it contrasts sharply with the Alps farther north. Vinica suits visitors who want a calm base away from crowds, perhaps combined with a stop at the museum. Dolenjske Toplice and the wider Dolenjska region are reachable by car, and Zagreb Airport is within a drive of the border.
