Vinag Wine Cellar

Located beneath Freedom Square in Maribor, the Vinag Wine Cellar is a significant historical site and major tourist attraction. Established in 1836 and expanded during the construction of the Vienna-Trieste railway, this underground complex spans approximately 20,000 square meters with 2 kilometers of meandering passages situated 18 meters below ground. The cellar houses around 6 million liters of wine and features historic elements, including a massive barrel from 1862 and a collection dating back to 1946. The walls, covered in 200-year-old mold, create a unique microclimate ideal for wine maturation.

Visitors can explore these historic tunnels through professional guided tours. The experience typically includes a walk through the passages, a visit to the archive, and wine tastings. Admission packages vary, with classic tours offering three wine samples for 20 EUR, while extra premium options provide five samples and a meat plate for 35 EUR. The site also offers team-building programs, private events, and cultural happenings, allowing guests to rent the space or create personalized experiences.

The cellar’s history adds depth to the visit. During World War II, the owner sealed off collections to protect them from Nazi seizure, resulting in some lost bottles with illegible labels. Since 1960, the cellar has been owned by the Vinag winery.
