#1 of 2 in Maribor

The Plague Column (Kužno znamenje) stands prominently in Maribor’s Main Square (Glavni trg), serving as one of the city’s most significant historical landmarks. Erected by local citizens in 1681, the monument commemorates the end of a devastating plague epidemic that swept through Maribor in 1680, claiming the lives of about a third of its population. The original column was later replaced by the current baroque structure, completed in 1743 by the German sculptor Joseph Straub, whose work is considered a highlight of baroque art in Slovenia.

The column is crafted from white marble and features an ornate pedestal supporting a tall Corinthian column. At its summit stands a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary, a symbol of hope and gratitude. Surrounding her are six statues of saints—intercessors to whom the townspeople prayed during the epidemic. The monument is enclosed by an ornamental stone fence, adding to its sense of reverence and importance.

For visitors, the Plague Column offers a tangible connection to Maribor’s past and a striking example of baroque sculpture. Its location in the bustling main square makes it easy to include in a walking tour of the city’s historical center. There are no admission fees or set opening hours, as the monument is accessible to the public at all times, inviting reflection on both the city’s hardships and its resilience.
