Tivoli Park

Tivoli Park is the largest park in Ljubljana, a long green belt that begins a few minutes' walk from the old town and climbs into the wooded hills of Rožnik and Šišenski hrib. The park proper is a formal landscape of avenues, lawns, flower beds and ponds, and behind it the forest continues for several kilometres, so within the city limits it is possible to be among trees in a few minutes. For residents it is the place for jogging, cycling, walking dogs and Sunday strolls, and for visitors it is a natural contrast to the cobbled streets of the centre.

The park's origins go back to the early nineteenth century, when the city's French administration laid out walks and gardens here, and it was reshaped in the 1920s by the architect Jože Plečnik, whose long promenade became its backbone. Today that route is the Jakopič Promenade, named for the painter Rihard Jakopič, a broad, tree-lined walk that works as an open-air gallery, where large photographs are displayed on fences along the way. Exhibitions change regularly and often deal with Slovenian and international themes.

Two mansions anchor the park's cultural life. Tivoli Mansion stands at the end of the promenade and houses a centre for graphic arts, while the Cekin Mansion, a Baroque building, hosts a museum of recent Slovenian history. The park also contains the Tivoli Rosarium, with its rose beds, a children's playground, outdoor fitness equipment, ponds and cafes, along with the sports halls at the edge of the park. Tičistan, a small bird-themed area, adds a quiet corner for those who like watching wildlife. Rožnik hill, with the church of St. Mary at its summit, offers longer walks, and the zoo lies on the hill's slopes.

The park is open at all hours and free to enter, which makes it easy to fit into any day. Guided walks are sometimes offered, but exploring on your own works well, since the paths are clearly laid out. In winter the bare trees and snow give a different mood, and in spring the flower beds and rose garden are at their best.

Tivoli Park suits families, joggers, cyclists and visitors who want to rest between the sights of the centre. It connects easily with Ljubljana's other attractions, since the old town, the Cukrarna gallery and the castle are within a short walk or ride. For the full circuit, allow half a day, including the climb up Rožnik, and bring water and comfortable shoes.
