The Ljubljanica is a calm, slow-flowing river that winds through the centre of Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and for much of its course in the city it is lined with stone embankments, trees and the backs of old houses. The architect Jože Plečnik reshaped the riverbanks in the first half of the twentieth century with arcades, steps, bridges and a covered market, and the Ljubljanica has become the city's main promenade, with cafes and terraces along its banks. A stand-up paddleboard tour gives a different view of all this, from the water, with the stonework and bridges rising above you.

Stand-up paddleboarding, known as SUP, is easy to learn. The board is wide and stable, and the paddler stands or kneels and moves with a long paddle. On a calm river like the Ljubljanica, beginners usually find their balance quickly, and tours begin with a short lesson on dry land that covers how to stand, how to paddle and what to do if you fall in. Falling in is part of the fun, and the water in summer is pleasantly cool. Equipment, including a board, paddle, buoyancy aid and sometimes a waterproof bag, is normally provided by the operator, and groups are small so the instructor can look after everyone.

The route usually starts at the old river landing known as Špica, in the Trnovo district, where the river is quiet and cafes occupy the bank. From there the tour follows the river through the city, passing under bridges and by the waterside streets, and takes in sights such as the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge, along with the Butchers' Bridge with its famous love padlocks. Guides tell stories about the city's history, from Roman Emona to the Habsburg centuries and the work of Plečnik, and the slow pace leaves time to look at the Gothic and Baroque buildings, the church towers and the castle on its hill. The reflections of the old town in the water make good photographs.

Tours are offered in the warmer months, usually from spring to autumn, and often at different times of day, including mornings and evenings when the light is soft. Duration, price and the exact route depend on the operator, and there may be age and weight limits, so check these when booking. Wear swimwear or quick-drying clothes, bring sun protection and a change of clothes, and follow the instructor's advice about boat traffic and low bridges.

The tour suits families, couples, groups of friends and anyone who likes an active way to see a city. It also combines well with a walk to the castle, a coffee on the embankment and a visit to the market.
