Slomsek Square

Slomšek Square serves as the cultural and architectural heart of Maribor’s western old town. This charming space is defined by its striking ensemble of monumental buildings, which include the Cathedral, the University of Maribor Rectorate, the Slovene National Theatre, and the main Post Office. Visitors are immediately struck by the square’s historical depth, reflected in its evolving name: originally known as Kirchenplatz, it became Stolni trg in 1859 when Bishop Anton Martin Slomšek moved the diocese seat to Maribor, before adopting its current name in 1919.

The square’s layout, designed in 1938 by the renowned architect Jože Plečnik, features an oval platform adorned with stone pillars and pyramidal oaks. At the center lies a park planted in 1891, which houses a decorative pool and significant statues. Notable sculptures include a depiction of Bishop Slomšek by Martin Drev and a figure of "Korlek" by Gabrijel Kolbič. The area also preserves tangible links to earlier eras, such as a Roman-era lion sculpture and historic tombstones embedded in the church walls.
