Slap Virje

Slap Virje is a waterfall just outside Bovec, in the Soča Valley in the Julian Alps, and it is among the easiest and most photogenic waterfalls in the area. The water comes from the Glijun Stream, which gushes from the Glijun Spring at the foot of the Kanin massif and flows down through a wooded gorge. After a short run it spills over a broad ledge of rock into a deep pool, where the water takes on a vivid emerald colour that changes with the light. The rock around is covered with moss and ferns, and the whole scene has a damp, green, almost tropical feeling that contrasts with the bare limestone of the mountains above.

The route is a short and gentle forest walk from the parking area. The path is wide and well kept, and it takes only around ten to fifteen minutes to reach the base of the waterfall, so it is suitable for families, older visitors and anyone who wants a quick outing between more strenuous activities. Information boards along the way explain the natural history of the area and the origin of the Glijun spring, and they are worth stopping to read. A small fee may apply for parking, so check the signs. If you want to go further, a path leads on towards Plužensko Jezero Lake and the source of the stream, adding perhaps half an hour to the excursion, and giving the chance to see more of the valley.

The waterfall is at its most powerful in spring, when snowmelt from the high ground swells the stream, but it is attractive throughout the year, and the pool remains vividly coloured even in dry spells. In summer the shade of the forest makes it a cool place on hot days, though the water is cold and the rocks are slippery, so swimming is not generally advised and care is needed near the edge. Photographers do best in soft light, in the early morning or late afternoon, when the colours of the water appear at their richest.

The falls are close to a cluster of other attractions in the Bovec basin. Boka Waterfall, Canyon Ucja, the Great Soca Gorge and Sušec all lie within reach, and active visitors can combine a stop here with Kayaking on Soča River, White-water Rafting on Soča River or Canyoning With Blažka. The Remnants From World War I in the valley add a historical dimension to a day out.

There is no entrance charge and the site can be visited at any time of day, though daylight is advisable. Bring sturdy shoes and a light jacket. Reaching it takes little effort, which is part of why Slovenia’s Soča waterfalls draw so many people.
