Boka Waterfall
Slovenia’s tallest, most powerful waterfall
Boka Waterfall, located just outside Bovec in the Soča Valley, is Slovenia’s most powerful and water-rich waterfall. Plunging 144 meters over a sheer cliff and spanning 18 meters in width, Boka is an awe-inspiring sight, especially in spring and autumn when snowmelt and rainfall swell its flow to dramatic levels. The thunderous cascade is fed by the Boka Stream, and the surrounding vertical rocky walls create a striking natural amphitheater that amplifies the waterfall’s roar.
Visitors can easily spot Boka Waterfall from the Bovec–Žaga road, where a well-marked trail leads to a panoramic viewpoint. The walk to the viewpoint takes about 15 minutes and rewards travelers with breathtaking views of the waterfall framed by cliffs and lush greenery. On sunny days, mist from the falls often creates rainbows, adding to the spectacle.
The site is steeped in local folklore, with one legend telling of a boy and girl whose encounter with a mysterious old lady led to the creation of the waterfall from her blood. The average water temperature is a brisk 4.5°C, and the flow can range from a trickle in summer to a torrent of up to 100 cubic meters per second in wetter months.
There are no set opening hours or admission fees, making Boka Waterfall an accessible and unforgettable stop for nature lovers and adventurers exploring the Julian Alps.
