Medieval castle on Sava and Brestanica rivers

9.2/10
#1 of 2 in Rajhenburg

Rajhenburg Castle, perched on a dramatic 60-meter promontory above the confluence of the Brestanica Stream and the Sava River, is one of Slovenia’s most intriguing historical landmarks. Built between 1131 and 1147 under Archbishop Conrad I, it holds the distinction of being the first castle constructed in the South Styrian lands of the Salzburg Archbishopric. Over the centuries, Rajhenburg has witnessed a fascinating evolution, with its architecture reflecting Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance influences.

The castle’s history is as varied as its design. After the original managing family died out in the 16th century, Rajhenburg underwent several transformations. In 1881, it became a Trappist monastery, renowned for chocolate and liqueur production, before being repurposed by German forces during World War II. Post-war, the castle served as a women’s correctional facility and later as a penal institution, before finding new life as a cultural and museum center in 1968.

Today, visitors to Rajhenburg Castle can explore permanent and temporary exhibitions that delve into its architectural evolution, monastic life, and the turbulent events of the 20th century. The castle also hosts concerts, plays, and lectures, making it a lively venue for cultural events. With its commanding views, rich history, and welcoming atmosphere, Rajhenburg Castle offers a memorable journey through time for history enthusiasts and curious travelers alike.
