Pohorje Mountains
Forest canopy trail and observation tower
The Pohorje Mountains, located west of Maribor in the Štajerska region, offer a distinct landscape of dense coniferous forests and rolling hills, reaching elevations of approximately 1,500 meters. While the area lacks dramatic rocky peaks, its cool climate supports significant winter sports activities and serves as a popular summer destination for hiking and mountain biking. A key attraction is the Lombkorona Trail and Tower on Rogla Mountain (1,517 m). This unique site features a 37-meter tall, multi-story spiral observation tower accessible via an obstacle-free, winding path built about 20 meters above the tree line. The trail, which opened in autumn 2019, provides panoramic views of the forest-covered mountains and surrounding valleys.
Visitors can access the region via cable cars, with schedules often adjusted for the holiday season, and two bus lines maintain summer connectivity. The area is also known for hosting events such as the DH Pohorje mountain biking competition. Infrastructure updates, including renovations to the Bolfenk Observation Tower and changes to parking facilities at locations like Vzpenjača and Snežni stadion, are ongoing to enhance visitor experience. Current conditions vary, with snow coverage dependent on specific locations like Areh or Bellevue, while temperatures generally range between 18°C and 24°C in warmer months. The Pohorje Mountains provide a accessible natural retreat for travelers seeking outdoor recreation, combining forest trails, observation points, and seasonal sports facilities in a setting easily reachable from major urban centers like Maribor and Celje.
