Onion Walk

Raka is a village on the lower Sava plain, in the Posavje region of eastern Slovenia, where flat, fertile fields run toward the river and the low hills of Krško. The area has long been an agricultural district, with arable land, gardens and orchards, and vegetable growing is an important part of local life. Among the crops grown here, onions have a special place, and the Onion Walk is a theme trail that uses a stroll through the countryside to tell the story of this humble but essential vegetable. It is the kind of local initiative that turns an everyday crop into a reason to look closely at the landscape.

The route follows quiet lanes and field tracks past plots, farmyards and the sheds where the onions are dried and stored, giving visitors a chance to see how the work of the year is organised. Onions are sown or planted in spring, tended through the summer and harvested at the end of the season, when they are pulled and left to dry in the sun before being braided or stored in nets. Local growers can explain the process, the varieties and the way the weather affects the crop, and depending on the season, visitors may be offered the chance to taste fresh onion dishes or even to take part in the harvest. Onions feature in many Slovene dishes, from soups and sauces to the onion-based salads and pies that appear on village tables.

The walk is easy, mostly flat and suitable for all ages, so it works well for families and for visitors who want a gentle outing. It generally passes through open countryside, with views toward the hills, and points of interest along the way might include the chapels and old farm buildings that are typical of Posavje. Raka also has a manor house, a legacy of the noble families who once held land here, and Gozdna železnica Raka, a forest railway, is a curiosity nearby. It is wise to check with the local tourist office about guided walks, special events and harvest days, since some activities are arranged only at certain times of year, and a guide makes the walk more informative. The best seasons are late spring, when the fields are green, and late summer and early autumn, when the harvest takes place.
