Old-Style Public Toilet

Brežice is a small town on the lower Sava, in the south-east of Slovenia, with a compact old centre arranged around the castle, and it is the kind of place where an everyday structure can become a point of local interest. The old-style public toilet is one of these small curiosities: a modest, older-looking public convenience that visitors on a walk through the centre may notice and that is part of the local story of how a town provided for its citizens before the age of modern facilities. It is not a monument in the usual sense, and no one would travel far to see it, but it is a reminder that heritage consists of ordinary things as well as grand ones.

Brežice is small enough to be explored on foot in a couple of hours, and the old centre offers a good deal that is more conventionally impressive. Brežice Castle, a large Renaissance and Baroque fortress with an arcaded courtyard, houses the Posavje Museum and a ceremonial hall with painted decoration. The Saint Vitus Church, with its tower, stands nearby, and the Water Tower is a landmark of the skyline. A path leads from the town to the river, and the Gravel Path Along the Sava River provides a pleasant walk or cycle ride, while the Confluence of the Krka and Sava Rivers lies a short distance away.

There is no admission fee, and the toilet is a public facility, generally accessible during the day, but visitors should treat it as a working facility and not a museum. Because details of its use and opening may change, it is worth asking at the tourist information point in town. The town is quiet and best visited in spring and autumn, and thermal spas in the area, such as Čatež, make a pleasant addition to a stay.
