Brežice lies on the lower Sava, in the south-east of Slovenia, close to the Croatian border, in a flat and fertile landscape known as Posavje. The river here is wide and slow, flowing between low banks, and a gravel path follows it for part of its length, giving walkers and cyclists a quiet route away from the road. The path is part of the national cycling network, the D2 route that runs along the Sava from Rateče in the far north-west of the country to Brežice, and it is marked with the usual red signs. This stretch is the end of a long journey for cyclists who have followed the river down from the Alps.

The riding is easy. The surface is gravel, firm in dry weather, and the gradient is almost nil, so it suits families, casual cyclists and walkers alike. Along the path, meadows and woods line the bank, and in some places there are views across the water to the Gorjanci hills and the Croatian shore. Herons, kingfishers and ducks can often be seen in the shallows, and in spring and autumn migrating birds pass along the river corridor. Shaded stretches and benches make it pleasant for a picnic.
