Ljubljana Central Market

The Ljubljana Central Market lies along the Ljubljanica in the old town, between the Triple Bridge and the Dragon Bridge, and it has been the main place for fresh produce in the Slovenian capital for generations. It is a large complex made up of three parts: an open-air market spread across the squares, Vodnikov trg and Pogačarjev trg, a covered colonnade beside the river and a row of small food shops, and together they give the centre of the city a lively working side that complements its more formal squares and bridges. The market was reshaped in the 1930s and 1940s by the architect Jože Plečnik, who transformed the riverbank into a walkway of colonnades, steps and pavilions, and his work gives the market its character.

The open-air section is the part that most people picture. Stalls under white umbrellas sell fruit and vegetables from the farms around Ljubljana and from further afield, with seasonal produce such as asparagus, strawberries, mushrooms and pumpkins, alongside honey, dried fruit, nuts, herbs, flowers and farm cheeses. Dry-cured meats, sausages and regional specialities are offered, and in the covered halls you can find fish, meat and dairy. The atmosphere is at its liveliest on weekday mornings and on Saturdays, when farmers and shoppers fill the squares, and it is easy to try small tastes of local products. At the end of the square stands a statue of Valentin Vodnik, the poet and priest after whom the square is named.

Plečnik's contribution is the covered market, a long, low arcade of columns that stretches along the river. Built in the early 1940s, it is a modern version of a classical colonnade, with shops and stalls under a continuous roof and a path on the water side. Together with the embankments, the Triple Bridge and other works by the architect, it forms part of the ensemble of Plečnik's Ljubljana that has attracted international attention. Details such as the lamps, columns and balustrades repay a slow look, and the river side of the arcade has cafes with views of the water.

The market also acts as an event space. A food festival known as Open Kitchen is held on Fridays from spring to autumn, with food stalls offering dishes from many cuisines, and on Saturdays an organic market adds to the choice. Nearby restaurants, street food kiosks and bakeries make it easy to eat on the spot.
