Ljubljana Cathedral

Ljubljana Cathedral, officially known as the Church of St. Nicholas, stands as a prominent landmark in the heart of Slovenia’s capital. This significant tourist attraction offers visitors a rich architectural journey, blending Romanic, Gothic, and Baroque styles. Originally established as a Romanic church in 1262, the structure was rebuilt in the Gothic style following a fire in 1361. Between 1701 and 1706, Jesuit architect Andrea Pozzo reconstructed it into the Baroque hall church seen today.

Visitors can explore the interior, which features notable decorations including frescoes by Giulio Quaglio and Matevž Langus, statues by Angelo Putti, and altar angels by Francesco Robba and the Groppelli brothers. The cathedral also displays 20th-century artistic additions, such as Tone Demšar’s entrance relief and Mirsad Begić’s side doors. Historically, the site served as the seat of the Ljubljana Diocese after its establishment in 1461 and saw the addition of its dome in 1841.

The cathedral is accessible to persons with movement disabilities and is open daily, with some sources indicating 24-hour access while others note specific visiting hours. Religious services take place nine times every day. While admission is often described as free, some visitor accounts mention a small entry fee of approximately three euros.
