Little Natural Bridge (Mali Naravni Most)

Rakov Škocjan is a small, steep-sided valley in the karst of southwestern Slovenia, near Cerknica, and it holds two natural stone bridges that are the best known sights of the place. The Little Natural Bridge, in Slovene Mali naravni most, is the smaller of the two and the one you meet first when walking the valley from the lower end. It is the surviving fragment of the roof of an old cave. Long ago, the Rak stream flowed through an underground gallery here, and when parts of the roof collapsed, they left the valley open to the sky, with only a few arches left in place. The Little Natural Bridge is one of those arches, a short span of rock over the stream, with the water running beneath it and vegetation clinging to the stone.

Its scale is more intimate than that of its larger neighbour. The arch is low enough to feel close, and standing beside it you can look through the opening along the stream and see the rock walls on both sides, with mosses, ferns and small trees growing in every crack. The water is clear, cool and mostly shallow, and in quieter times you hear little beyond its murmur and the calls of woodland birds. In spring or after rain the flow is stronger and the colours richer, while in a dry summer the stream shrinks and the arch looks more like a stone doorway through a dry gorge. The light changes with the time of day and the season, and photographers will find the best conditions in the morning or late afternoon.

The bridge is easy to reach on the marked paths of the valley. Walking trails link it with the Big Natural Bridge, with the View of the Big Natural Bridge from the north, and with the Zelške Caves at the upper end of the valley, and the Educational trail explains the geology along the way. Sturdy shoes are recommended, since the rocky ground can be wet and slippery, and the slopes near the arch are steep and unstable, so do not climb on the rock. Rakov Škocjan is among the oldest protected landscapes in Slovenia and is now part of the Notranjska Regional Park, which is why you are asked to stay on the paths and take any litter with you. There is no entrance fee.

Pair it with the other features of the valley. Caves and formations, Karst formations, Cave halls and the Underground river passages complete the picture of a valley shaped by water and collapse.

It suits walkers, families and photographers. Mali Naravni Most is the quieter of the two bridges, and the Great Natural Bridge downstream is the showpiece. The Rak River passes beneath both, and Slovenia’s karst rarely looks so tidy. Most visitors linger here longer than they plan.
