Zelške Caves

The Zelške Caves, Zelške jame, lie at the upper end of Rakov Škocjan, the karst valley in the Notranjska region of southwestern Slovenia, close to Cerknica. They are among the caves through which the water of the region travels, and they are the place where the Rak stream comes out of the rock into daylight. The caves are best understood as part of the wider valley, a landscape formed by the collapse of a large cave system, in which sections of the old cave ceiling have fallen in and left natural bridges and open ravines.

The water story is the reason the caves matter. The stream that flows through Rakov Škocjan begins its journey far away, in the catchment of Cerknica Lake and the surrounding karst plain, sinks into the ground and travels through hidden passages before it appears at the Zelške Caves. It flows across the valley floor, passes under the two natural bridges, and then sinks again into other caves at the lower end. From there it continues underground to the next karst plain. The valley thus holds a short, open stretch of a much longer subterranean river.

Inside, the caves contain large chambers and passages shaped by water, with stone formations of the kind found in many karst caves, and some halls rise to impressive height. The deeper parts are for experienced cavers, and visitors without proper equipment and guidance should not enter, since flooding after rain can be sudden and dangerous. What the ordinary visitor can do is walk the paths on the valley floor and look at the cave mouths, the rocky walls and the stream, and read the information boards on the educational trail that explains the geology and wildlife.

The trail leads through meadows and woods to viewpoints, among them the classic view of the Great Natural Bridge from the north, and to the Little Natural Bridge. The route is on the whole easy and suits families, but the ground can be wet, so shoes with grip are helpful. Nearby farms offer rooms and local food for those who want to stay longer.

The caves suit walkers, geology enthusiasts, photographers and anyone interested in how karst water works. Spring and autumn are the most atmospheric seasons, with higher water in the stream and soft light in the valley. Because conditions change with rain, check local advice and water levels before setting out, and keep away from cave entrances after heavy rainfall.
