Left Bank Trail

Iški Vintgar is a wooded gorge on the Iška River, a short drive south of Ljubljana on the edge of the Ljubljana Marsh, where the flat basin gives way to the hills of Krim and the plateaus beyond. It is one of the capital's favourite places for a half-day walk, and it is much quieter than the better-known gorges of the Alps. The Left Bank Trail is the path that runs along the left side of the river, following the water upstream through forest, mossy boulders and shaded pools.

The walk begins near the mountain lodge in the gorge, known as Dom v Iškem vintgarju, which is the usual starting point and a convenient place to eat and rest. From there the path follows the river through a narrow valley whose walls are made of dolomite and limestone, with outcrops, small cascades and clear pools along the way. The rock here includes veined stones and colourful pebbles that the river has polished, and it is worth looking at the river bed as well as the cliffs. Moss and ferns cover the wet rock, and in early spring the woods flower with spring snowflakes, one of the first signs of the season.

The trail is not difficult, and it suits families and casual walkers, but the surface can be uneven, rocky and slippery, especially after rain, and sturdy shoes with good grip are advisable. In places the path is close to the water and there are narrow stretches, so children need to be kept under supervision. A particular feature of the route is the stone known as Votli kamen, the Hollow Stone, a rock formation that attracts visitors and makes a good objective for a short outing.

The gorge is also a starting point for longer walks. Marked paths climb out of the valley toward Rakitna, Krim and Bloke, giving options for a full day in the hills, and the area is popular with trail runners and cyclists as well as walkers. The surrounding forests are home to a variety of birds and small mammals, and the combination of river, rock and woodland is rich in plant life, including alpine species that grow here at unusually low altitude because of the cool, shaded gorge.

The trail suits walkers, families, photographers and anyone who wants a quick escape from Ljubljana into wild scenery. Spring and autumn are the best seasons, with flowers in spring and colour in autumn, while summer offers cool shade on hot days. After heavy rain the water level rises and paths can be muddy, so check conditions locally before setting out.
