Dom v Iškem vintgarju is a mountain lodge in the Iška valley, at the upper end of the Iški Vintgar gorge, where the path along the river opens into a clearing among the trees. The Iška flows out of the hills south of Ljubljana, passing through the gorge before reaching the edge of the Ljubljana Marsh, and the lodge stands where the narrowest part of the canyon gives way to a broader, greener valley. For walkers who have come through the gorge, it is a natural place to stop, and for hikers heading into the hills, it is a useful starting point.

The lodge is a simple, rustic building of the kind that hikers in Slovenia are used to, with a terrace, a dining room and plain, hearty food. Typical dishes include soups, sausages, polenta and pastries, together with drinks, and it is a place to rest, rather than to dine in style. In summer, the terrace is shaded and cool, with the sound of the river nearby, and families often spend an afternoon here, paddling in the shallows and picnicking on the banks. In cooler months the interior is warm and welcoming, and the lodge is popular with groups of walkers. From the lodge, marked paths lead to several destinations. One route climbs through forest toward Krim, the highest hill of the area at around 1,100 metres, with a mountain hut and wide views of the Ljubljana Marsh and the Alps, while others lead to the plateau of Rakitna, with its small lake, and to Bloke, a plateau known for its skiing and its traditions. These routes vary in length and difficulty, so walkers should choose according to fitness and weather. The surroundings are quiet and green, and in spring they are brightened by flowering shrubs.

The lodge pairs naturally with the sights of the gorge itself. The Left Bank Trail, Votli kamen, the dolomite rocks and the plants of the shaded slopes are all covered in other entries, including the Iški Vintgar Gorge and the Unique rock formations. Together they make a half-day or full-day outing from Ljubljana, reached in less than half an hour by car. It suits families, casual walkers and anyone looking for a calm natural escape close to the capital.
