Izvir cvička (Wine Fountain)

Izvir cvička, which means the Spring of Cviček, is a tasting point in the spa village of Šmarješke Toplice, in Lower Carniola, where visitors can serve themselves the local wine from a fountain-like dispenser. Cviček is the signature wine of Dolenjska, a light, low-alcohol, tart red wine, pale ruby in colour, made by blending red and white grapes that are grown and often harvested together in the same vineyards. It has protected status and a place in the regional identity, and it is best drunk young and cool, with bread, cured ham or cheese. The wine fountain is a modern way of introducing it to visitors, in the middle of the vineyards where it is made.

The fountain is an octagonal structure, designed so that it can be moved, and it stands in a pleasant spot among vineyards and chestnut trees. Visitors choose a tasting package, receive a glass and a card or token, and then help themselves from the taps to the wines on offer. These include cviček itself and the grape varieties from which it is typically composed: Blaufränkisch, known in Slovenia as Modra frankinja, the red Žametovka, the white Kraljevina and other local whites. Tasting them separately is educational, because it shows how the blend gets its character, with the red contributing colour and structure and the white adding freshness and acidity. For groups, local snacks can be arranged by prior booking, and the setting invites a relaxed afternoon.

Next to the fountain stands a house with a tourist information point and a small shop, where visitors can buy wine, souvenirs and tasting glasses and ask about walks and sights in the area. The fountain is open only on certain days and at certain times, with some days closed, so it is wise to check before going, and prices vary with the package. As with all wine tasting, drivers should arrange alternatives, and taking a bus or a taxi is a good idea.

Šmarješke Toplice has other attractions to fill a day. The spa has a modern thermal centre and a historic wooden pool, Šmarješke Toplice Lesen Bazen, where bathers float in warm water in a setting of old timber and greenery. Nearby, Klevevška Toplica is a warm spring, Radulja Gorge is a quiet nature spot, and the Crystal Valley and the House of Living Heritage give insights into local life and traditions. Walkers and cyclists can enjoy the Vineyards, Meadows, and Forests that surround the village. The fountain is best visited in late spring or early autumn, when the vineyards are at their most attractive.
