Freedom Square Maribor

Freedom Square, in Slovene Trg svobode, is one of the main open spaces of Maribor, a broad pedestrian square just beside the old town and a short walk from the castle. It has been a gathering place for generations of the city's people, and its shape and monuments reflect the changing history of Maribor, which belonged to the Habsburg monarchy, to Yugoslavia and, since 1991, to independent Slovenia. The square is a good place to start a walk through the city, since the main sights are within easy reach, and it is also a pleasant place to sit and watch the city go by.

The most prominent monument in the square is the National Liberation Monument, a large bronze sculpture by the Slovenian artist Slavko Tihec, unveiled in the 1970s. It honours the resistance fighters and the victims of the Nazi occupation during the Second World War, when Maribor was annexed by Germany and its Slovenian population suffered deportation, forced labour and executions. The sculpture is monumental and expressive, with strong, simplified forms that were typical of postwar commemorative art in Yugoslavia, and it is one of the most important pieces of public sculpture in the city. Visitors can read the inscriptions and reflect on the history it recalls, and the monument often appears in local photographs. The square is also a stage for the daily life of the city. Markets and community events are held there from time to time, cafes and shops line the edges, and people meet to talk, wait for friends or take a break from shopping. Maribor Castle is a short walk away, and Maribor Cathedral, whose bell tower can sometimes be climbed for a wide view over the city and the surrounding hills, is also close.

The square is open at all times and free to enter, and it is accessible for wheelchair users and people with pushchairs, as it is flat and paved. It is best seen in the morning or early evening, when the light is gentle and the square is not too crowded.
