Educational trail showcasing Škocjan’s karst landscape
The educational trail in Rak Škocjan, part of the Škocjan Caves Regional Park, offers visitors an immersive journey through one of Slovenia’s most fascinating karst landscapes. This well-marked, 2-kilometre path begins and ends at the Information Centre in Matavun, making it easily accessible for all ages and fitness levels. The walk takes about 50 minutes at a leisurely pace, but you’ll want to allow extra time to stop at the many interpretive signs and viewpoints along the way.
As you follow the trail, you’ll learn about the unique geological features that define the Classical Karst, including dramatic collapse dolines (sinkholes), the mysterious disappearing Reka River, and the lush vegetation that thrives in this special environment. Explanatory boards, complete with illustrations and engaging texts, highlight both natural phenomena and the rich cultural heritage of the area. Renovated barns along the route showcase ethnological exhibits and the history of the Škocjan Caves.
Highlights include panoramic views from Štefanija and Mici viewpoints, where you can gaze into the vast Velika and Mala dolinas. The trail also passes through picturesque villages and past a natural bridge and a waterfall in Velika dolina, offering plenty of photo opportunities.
The educational trail is recognized as one of Slovenia’s best thematic walks, providing a perfect introduction to the wonders of the Škocjan Caves Park—whether you’re a curious traveler, a family, or a nature enthusiast.
