Educational trail

Rakov Škocjan is a small, steep-sided valley in the karst of southwestern Slovenia, and it is protected as part of the Notranjska Regional Park. Because the valley compresses so many karst features into a short distance, it is an ideal place for an educational trail, a marked walking route with information boards that explain what you are looking at. The trail is aimed at anyone who is curious, not just specialists, and it makes a good introduction to the valley before you explore the individual sights. It is also well suited to families and school groups, since the walking is easy and the explanations are written to be accessible.

The first thing the boards explain is the idea of karst itself. Karst is a landscape formed by the slow dissolving of limestone by rainwater, and it produces a distinctive set of features: sinkholes, caves, underground rivers, springs that appear and vanish, and dry valleys. The name comes from the Kras, the plateau in this part of Slovenia, and the region gave its name to the whole world of such landscapes. In Rakov Škocjan, the Rak stream emerges from the Zelške Caves, flows for a short distance through the valley and then sinks again underground, and the boards use this simple pattern to explain how water moves through the rock. They also describe the collapse of old caves that created the valley, the natural bridges that remain from the cave roofs, the plants and animals that live in the cool, damp shelter of the sinkholes, and the human story of the farms and mills that once used the stream.

Along the way, the route passes the main viewpoints and features of the valley. The Little Natural Bridge and the Big Natural Bridge are the highlights, and the trail connects with the View of the Big Natural Bridge from the north. Caves and formations, Cave halls, Karst formations and the Underground river passages are explained in more detail in their own entries, and the Zelške Caves, with their large halls, can only be visited with proper arrangements. The educational trail gives the framework within which all these make sense.

The paths are marked and mostly easy, but they can be damp and slippery after rain, so wear shoes with good grip, and keep to the paths because the slopes are steep and the vegetation is fragile. Allow an hour or two, longer if you stop to read all the boards. There is no entry fee.

The trail suits families, school groups and curious walkers. Spring and autumn are the best seasons. Highlights of the walk include the viewpoints over the sinkholes, and Information boards give just enough detail to keep you curious, and the Rak River ties it together. Slovenia’s karst is best learned by walking.
