Castles of Posavje

Posavje is the lower Sava valley in the southeast of Slovenia, a gentle landscape of vineyards, orchards, forested ridges and quiet river meadows that runs towards the Croatian border. It is also one of the most castle-rich corners of the country. Because the Sava, Krka and Sotla river valleys formed natural routes between the Alps, the Pannonian plain and the Adriatic, local lords built fortified houses on many of the hills and river terraces, and the region has long been described as a land of castles. Some are now ruins, some have been turned into museums and hotels, and some remain private homes, so the number and condition of the buildings vary a great deal from one to the next.

A selection of the better preserved castles forms a loose route. Brežice Castle, on the edge of the town of Brežice, is a large Renaissance-Baroque complex with a ceremonial hall and houses the Posavje Museum. Mokrice Castle, near the Croatian border, is an elegant mansion in a landscaped English park with a golf course, and today it is run as a hotel. Rajhenburg Castle in Brestanica has a very different history, having later become a monastery site, and Sevnica Castle overlooks its town from a hill. Others, among them Pišece, Bizeljsko and Kostanjevica, add further layers of history, so you could easily spend several days following them.

What makes the route enjoyable is that each stop has a different character. Some castles open their courtyards for concerts, markets and weddings, others hold exhibitions on local history, and a few offer tastings of regional wines such as the Cviček and Bizeljsko-Sremič wines. The surrounding countryside provides a gentle pace, with walking paths, cycling routes along the Sava and thermal baths nearby at Čatež for a rest after sightseeing.

The practical side needs thought, because castles in the region are run by different owners, museums and municipalities. Opening times, tours and events change through the year, so check each one in advance, and do not assume that every castle can be visited inside. Some are best admired from the outside or from a viewpoint on the hill above.

You will find food and lodging in the area too. Inn Pension Les, Ošterija Debeluh, the Restaurant and Hotel Tri Lučke and Restaurant Repovž serve local dishes, including roast meats, dumplings and regional wines, and are handy for lunch or an overnight stay between castle visits.

The Castles of Posavje suit history lovers, families who like exploring and anyone who enjoys a gentle drive through quiet landscape. A car makes things easiest, since the sites are spread out and public transport is limited. Each castle rewards the effort. Set aside a full day at least, because Slovenia’s southeast is best enjoyed slowly. While some sites close in winter, the Slovenian countryside is pleasant for much of the year.
