Canyon Ucja

Učja is a river and canyon near Bovec, in the Soča Valley at the foot of the Kanin massif, and it is best known today as the setting of the Bovec Zipline park. The Učja stream runs through a deep, narrow gorge with steep limestone walls, and the water inside is a vivid green. The gorge is hard to see from the road, and its depth and the sheer rock faces make it a dramatic place to cross by wire.

The zipline park uses the canyon in the way its name suggests. A series of lines runs across the gorge and along its length, so that riders fly over the water and the rock walls at heights that give an impressive view down into the narrow channel. The park is one of the major attractions in Bovec and is promoted as a large zipline park in the Alpine region. The experience is guided, with trained staff who fit the harness and helmet, explain the signals and the braking technique and accompany the group from line to line. A full tour takes a couple of hours, and includes short walks between the platforms, so a reasonable level of fitness and comfort with heights are useful. Age, weight and health limits apply, so check when you book.

Practical points matter. Tours run to a timetable that varies with the season, so book ahead and check departure times, and arrive early for equipment fitting and the safety briefing. Sturdy closed shoes and comfortable clothing are required, and loose items should be left behind, as clothing such as skirts and sandals is not suitable. Lines may be closed in strong wind, heavy rain or low visibility, which is something to bear in mind in the mountains.

Outside the zipline, the canyon is a place of striking natural beauty, and walkers and photographers can enjoy the surroundings by following paths in the area. The sound of the river and the reflected green light on the rock walls give the gorge a distinctive atmosphere. The wider area has plenty to offer too. Boka Waterfall, Slap Virje, the Great Soca Gorge and Sušec are all within a short drive, and Kayaking on Soča River, White-water Rafting on Soča River and Canyoning With Blažka offer other ways to enjoy the water. The zipline suits adventure seekers, families with older children and groups of friends, and it is a good activity in Bovec for days when river sports are not possible. Advance booking is strongly recommended in summer. Canyon Učja is in the Julian Alps, in the west of Slovenia, and the zipline park is one of Slovenia’s signature adventure sites.
