Vitarium Spa and Beauty is the adult-oriented wellness area of Terme Dolenjske Toplice, the thermal complex in the Lower Carniolan spa town of Dolenjske Toplice. The town grew up around its warm mineral springs, which have been used for bathing for a very long time, and the spa remains the centre of local life. Vitarium is designed for people who want a quieter, more relaxing experience than the family pools, with a focus on warm water, heat and treatments, set in a building that looks out onto the forested hills.
A typical day here involves moving between different kinds of warmth. Indoor and outdoor thermal pools offer water at several temperatures, and the outdoor basins are especially pleasant on a cool day, when steam rises from the surface. Around the pools there are saunas and steam baths, usually in a range of types, from dry heat to herbal steam and bio saunas, together with relaxation rooms and areas for resting between sessions. As in most Central European spas, it is customary to alternate between heat and cool water and to allow time to rest, and the facilities are laid out accordingly. The programme includes massages, beauty and body treatments, and guided relaxation sessions, with specialised programmes for stress relief, detox and general health. The spa also offers medical and aesthetic services, so it is wise to ask at the reception what is currently available.
Families with children are catered for elsewhere in the complex, in the water park known as the Balnea FUN kingdom, and many visitors split the day between the two, with children enjoying the slides while adults relax in Vitarium. Meals are available in the Balnea Hotel Restaurant and other places in the resort, and the Hotel Balnea, with its modern design, offers accommodation.
Beyond the spa, the surrounding countryside is worth exploring. The Divji Potok Creek Circular Hiking Trail follows a wild stream, the Wooden Bridge Over the Sušica Stream is a picturesque stop in town, and Devil's Tower is a local landmark. Hiking, cycling and Electric Mountain Bike Rentals are available, and there is a Peaceful Campsite by the River. The Craft Beer Scene in the area is a recent addition. The Pleterje Charterhouse, the only active Carthusian monastery in Slovenia, and Otočec Castle make good day trips. The main Dolenjske Toplice Spa and the Thermal Swimming Pools are covered separately. Opening hours and prices vary by season, so check before visiting.
