The Savinja is the main river of the northeastern part of Slovenia, a river of about a hundred kilometres that rises in the Logar Valley in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, flows through the Upper Savinja Valley past Luče, Ljubno, Mozirje and Nazarje, and then crosses the Celje basin before joining the Sava at Zidani Most. In the upper valley it is a lively, clear mountain river that runs over gravel beds and through small gorges, with green banks and, in many places, riverside trees and meadows. At Mozirje it flows past the town and offers a natural promenade, and the walk along its bank is one of the easiest ways to enjoy the valley without leaving the town. The details of the path vary, so it is wise to ask at the information point about the best stretches.
The river has shaped life in the valley for centuries. Its water powered mills and sawmills, and timber from the mountain forests was floated downstream on rafts to Celje and beyond, a trade that employed many valley families and left its mark on local customs. The Upper Savinja is also one of the most popular places in the country for river sports, and rafting and kayaking trips run in the season, with stretches suitable for beginners and for experienced paddlers. Anglers value the river for its trout and grayling, and fishing is regulated by permit. Walking along the bank, you can often see paddlers go by, herons stand in the shallows and kingfishers dart over the water.
The walk itself is gentle and mostly flat, suitable for families, older visitors and anyone who prefers an easy stroll. The path follows the river on the edge of town, with benches and picnic spots and with views toward the hills and the mountain ridges. Plants along the bank include willows, alders and riverside flowers, and the shade of the trees is welcome on hot days. Some sections are paved and some are unpaved, so shoes with some grip are useful, and after heavy rain the river can rise and parts of the path may be wet or closed, so check conditions.
From the riverside, it is easy to connect with other sights. The parish church and the cultural centre are close to the centre, the Alpine flower garden of Mozirje, a botanical garden on a hill above the river, is a short distance away, and the foothills offer longer walks. The scenic road up the valley leads to Luče, Solčava and the Logar Valley, where the river begins.
The walk suits walkers, families, anglers and bird watchers. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons, and early morning and evening are the quietest times. Take water and a light layer.
