Novoletni Slotrail

Planinsko polje is one of the classic karst plains of Slovenia, a broad flat-bottomed basin in the Notranjska region, ringed by wooded hills and limestone ridges. The river Unica emerges from the Planina Cave at its southern end, crosses the plain and sinks into the ground again near Laze, and in wet seasons the polje floods and becomes a shallow lake. Around the edge of the plain, villages, old farmsteads and the remains of medieval castles sit on the slopes, and the hills above offer wide views over the meadows and the winding river. A long loop trail around the plain, known as the Novoletni Slotrail, takes advantage of this setting and is aimed at serious hikers, trail runners and strong cyclists.

The trail is described as a very demanding circuit of more than forty kilometres with a great deal of climbing, which makes it a full day's effort and in most cases a challenge that takes many hours. It links viewpoints and summits on the surrounding ridges, among them peaks such as Grmada and Kolobar, with stretches through open meadows and long sections through beech woods and forest tracks. Because the terrain is karst limestone, some paths are stony and uneven, and the lack of surface water on the high ground means that walkers must carry enough to drink for the whole day. Distances, heights and timings quoted for such routes should be treated as approximate, and it is wise to check the current route and any changes with local sources.

Planning matters for a trail of this kind. An early start gives time to finish in daylight, a navigation device and a map are advisable, since not every junction is signposted, and good shoes, a rain layer and food are essential. The weather in the hills can change quickly, and there are no services on the route itself, so it is best to tell someone where you are going. In summer the shade of the forest helps, though the lowland sections can be hot, while after heavy rain parts of the plain and the lower paths may be under water.

The views are the reward. From the ridges the polje spreads below like a patchwork, and the course of the Unica can be followed by the line of willows and alders. Birdlife is rich, with raptors over the slopes and wetland birds on the plain, and spring brings flowers to the meadows. Nearby attractions include the Unica river itself, the Planina Cave, the remains of the castles on the hills and the spring known locally as Putick's Wells.

The route suits experienced trail runners, endurance hikers and cyclists who enjoy a big day in quiet country. Less experienced walkers can take shorter sections of the loop and still enjoy good views.
