Natural swimming pool at Tržkov slap

Adlešiči is a village in Bela Krajina in southeastern Slovenia, on the Kolpa River, which forms the border with Croatia. The Kolpa is famous in Slovenia as a river for summer swimming: it is shallow and slow in many stretches, flows over gravel and limestone, and warms up in July and August to temperatures that few Slovene rivers reach. The natural swimming spot at Tržkov slap, a small cascade on the river, belongs to this tradition, and it is especially popular with families because of the calm, shallow water.

The setting is simple and green. The river runs between wooded banks and meadows, and the pool is formed where the current is gentle behind the little waterfall. There are no large constructions, so the experience is that of swimming in a river in a rural landscape, with the sound of water and birdsong. Conditions depend on the season and the water level, so after rain or in spring the current can be stronger and the water colder, and it is sensible to keep a close eye on children and non-swimmers.

The village has a strong cultural identity. Adlešiči is known for preserving the folk traditions of Bela Krajina, with an active cultural society, a folklore group with a long history, and craftswomen who make embroidery, home linen and decorated Easter eggs in the traditional style of the region. The cultural-artistic community named after Božo Račič keeps these customs alive, and a local gallery, Galerija Kambič, shows work by area artists. A memorial at Gricek and other small monuments recall local history.

The river is also the centre of outdoor activity. Canoeing and rafting trips start near the Jankovič campsite at Stari pod, and the same area offers camping and wooden glamping houses for those who want to stay near the water. Cycling routes and walking paths run along the valley, and the Vizir brewery offers a local drink to finish the day.

The spot suits families, canoeists, cyclists and anyone who wants a quiet river holiday in an unspoiled region. It is best from June to early September, when the water is warm, though the surrounding villages are pleasant to visit in any season. Facilities are modest, so bring food, water and sun protection, and check local conditions before swimming.
