Natural Park Jovsi

Jovsi is a nature reserve in the east of Slovenia, in the Posavje region, along the lower course of the river Sotla, which forms part of the border with Croatia. The park protects an area of low-lying wet meadows, marshes, ponds and woodland on the flat floodplain beside the river, a type of landscape that has become scarce in Europe as rivers have been straightened and wetlands drained. It is a place for quiet walking and wildlife watching rather than dramatic scenery, and its value lies in the variety of life that depends on wet ground.

The meadows are kept open by traditional farming. Mowing and grazing, carried out on a seasonal cycle, stop the land from turning into scrub and woodland, and the flowers, insects and birds that live in the meadows depend on that rhythm. That is why the park works closely with local farmers rather than excluding them, and it is a good example of conservation that keeps people on the land. The result is a mosaic of habitats supporting a rich selection of plants, amphibians, dragonflies, butterflies and birds, including species that are rare or endangered elsewhere in Slovenia. A visit usually starts at the information room, where a short film and displays introduce the ecosystem and explain what to look for. From there the Koščevo path, a marked trail, leads through the wetlands, offering good views of the meadows, ponds and reed beds. An observation tower on the route gives a higher view across the landscape and a chance to scan for birds, so bring binoculars and a camera with a good lens. Guided tours are available and help with identifying species, and they sometimes include a tasting of local products, which adds a culinary dimension to the walk.
