Ljutomer Main Square

Ljutomer is the main town of the Prlekija region in the northeast of Slovenia, a landscape of rolling vineyards between the Mura and Drava rivers, and its main square, Glavni trg, is the natural place to begin a visit. The square is a long, open space lined with low houses in soft colours, shops, cafes and public buildings, with a calm, small-town rhythm. In the middle stands a shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary, a Baroque-era monument of the kind that appears in the centre of many towns across the former Habsburg lands, erected to give thanks for deliverance from plague or other hardships. Its carved figure and base give the square its focal point, and the shrine has been renovated since its first erection.

Ljutomer has a special place in Slovenian history. In the late 1860s the town hosted one of the first tabors, the mass open-air rallies at which Slovenes demanded the right to use their own language and to unite their lands within the Habsburg Empire. These meetings were a key part of the national awakening, and Ljutomer is still remembered for its role. The town library, the museum and the art gallery around the square reflect that cultural tradition, and local people take pride in the way a small place made a contribution to the national story. The town is also tied to the early history of Slovenian film. In 1905 a local man, Karol Grossmann, made the first Slovenian motion pictures here, and that connection is celebrated each summer at the Grossmann Fantastic Film and Wine Festival, which uses the main square and other venues. At festival time, the square is full of screens, tables and people, and during the rest of the year it is a quiet place to sit with a coffee. Markets and music events are held here occasionally, so it is worth checking the town's calendar.

Nearby are other sights worth a short stroll. The Church of St. John the Baptist stands close to the square, the Ante Trstenjak Art Gallery shows regional art, and the Ljutomer Museum rounds out the cultural offer. The surrounding Wine Hills are Ljutomer's real attraction, with vineyards producing Šipon, Laški Rizling and other white wines, and wine roads lead out from the town into the countryside, with cellars that welcome visitors by arrangement.

There are no fixed opening hours or entrance charges for the square itself, since it is a public space.
