Lake Kreda

Lake Kreda is a small mountain lake in the district of Zgornje Gorje, in the hills above Bled in Upper Carniola. Gorje is the gateway to the Pokljuka plateau and to the Vintgar Gorge, and its villages are scattered among meadows, forests and farms at the foot of the Julian Alps. The lake lies in this quiet, wooded countryside, and it offers a gentler, less crowded alternative to the big lakes at Bled and Bohinj that lie a short drive away. Paths and forest tracks lead into the surrounding woods and meadows, with options for short strolls and longer hikes to viewpoints, and the area is rich in plants, butterflies and birds. Cycling on the quiet roads of Gorje is another way to explore, and the villages have farms that sell milk, cheese and other products, among them Kmetija Pr' Kolenc, which is one of the farms nearby. The Šum waterfall, at the end of the Vintgar Gorge, is another short excursion in the same area.

The Gorje district has a long tradition of mountain farming, and its villages preserve old houses, small chapels and a calm rural rhythm. Bled, with its lake, castle and island, is about fifteen minutes away by car, and Pokljuka, with its forests, bogs and biathlon centre, is a short climb to the west. This makes the lake a handy stop for those who base themselves in Bled but want a quieter day away from the crowds.

The lake suits families, walkers and anyone who wants a peaceful stop on the way between the lakes and the mountains. Summer is the best time for swimming, though the water is cool, and spring and autumn offer quiet walks.
