Krašnji Vrh Cycling Route

Krašnji Vrh is a small village in Bela Krajina, the south-eastern corner of Slovenia, in the hills near the Croatian border, and the cycling route that bears its name is a gentle way to see a landscape that few visitors know. Bela Krajina, or White Carniola, lies south of the Gorjanci hills and has a character of its own, with low karst ridges, broad valleys, birch and beech woods, and a warm, continental climate that gives it some of the warmest summers in Slovenia. Villages are small and farmland is mixed, with orchards, vineyards and meadows, and the roads are quiet.

The route follows country lanes and forest tracks through this landscape, and it can be ridden at a relaxed pace by recreational cyclists, including families. It passes the sort of features that define a karst region: dry valleys, sinkholes, small caves and outcrops of limestone, where the ground has been shaped by water running underground rather than on the surface. Nearby are a Pečenevka abyss, a deep sinkhole that shows the hidden world beneath the surface, and a Natural climbing wall that draws climbers to the rock. Cyclists should keep away from the edges of abysses and caves, and should not enter them without proper equipment and guidance.

The views from the high points of the route are among its attractions. From open ridges, the land falls away in gentle folds to the Kolpa valley and the wooded hills of Žumberak on the Croatian side, and the horizon is a long, soft line. The Church of the Holy Trinity, an eighteenth-century building, stands in the village and is a typical example of rural churches in the region, simple in form and set among trees. In spring, the meadows are full of flowers, and in autumn the colours of the woods are rich, while summer brings warm weather and the sound of insects.

The route is free to ride at any time, and no booking is needed, though it is wise to carry water, a repair kit and a map or a navigation app, since signposting in remote areas can be limited. Combine the ride with a visit to other places in Bela Krajina: the Kolpa river is warm enough for swimming in summer, the town of Metlika and Črnomelj have old centres and wine cellars, and the region's tradition of painted Easter eggs and folk festivals adds colour to any trip. The best seasons for cycling are spring and early autumn.
