Information Point

Šentanel is a small village in Koroška, the Carinthian corner of northern Slovenia, set on a slope above the valley of the Meža and looking across to the Karavanke along the Austrian border. It is a place of farms, meadows and forest, with a church at its centre and a scattering of guesthouses, and the kind of village that rewards walking and cycling more than sightseeing. In such a place, an information point plays a modest but useful role. It is where visitors can find out what there is to do, how to get there and what is open, and it is also one of the few places where the village presents itself to the outside world.

A small tourist information point of this type typically offers maps of local walking and cycling routes, leaflets about local sights, and advice on viewpoints, farm shops and places to eat and stay. It may also display information about the village's history, with panels or objects showing local crafts, traditions and the stories of the people who lived here. In a rural area, such points are often run by volunteers or by a local association rather than by professional staff, and hours may be limited to the main tourist season and weekends, so do not count on it being open. The church of St. Anne gives the settlement its focus, and the surroundings are rich in traditional farmsteads, with their wooden outbuildings, orchards and hay racks. The ridge trails nearby offer panoramic views over the valleys and the line of the Karavanke, and the Watering Hole, a stone trough fed by a spring, is a pleasant rest stop on a walk. The region's mining and industrial past, especially the lead and zinc mines of the Meža valley, is a theme that appears in many local museums and displays, and the information point can direct you to them. Religious history is also visible in the many wayside shrines and chapels of the area.

It makes sense to call at the information point at the start of a visit, to pick up a map, ask about the weather and the state of the paths, and find out about events such as village festivals.

It suits walkers, cyclists and anyone who wants to learn about a quiet corner of Koroška. Spring and early autumn are the best seasons. Staffed by locals, the point reflects Slovenian rural hospitality. While it is small, it is a good start.
