Krčnik and Kotline
Natural stone bridge and pools carved by creek
Krčnik and Kotline are two of Goriška Brda’s most enchanting natural attractions, offering visitors a refreshing escape into the region’s lush, sun-dappled landscape. Located near the village of Kožbana, Krčnik is best known for its remarkable natural stone bridge—a polished arch, five meters long and over a meter thick, carved over centuries by the flowing waters of the Kožbanjšček creek. This unique geological formation spans a narrow gorge, creating a picturesque scene that is beautiful year-round and especially inviting in the summer.
A short walk from the Neblo–Brdice pri Kožbani road leads you to the bridge, where you can admire the smooth, rounded stone and the deep sinkhole beneath. The area is steeped in local legend, with oral traditions recounting the bridge’s mysterious creation.
Just downstream, Kotline features a series of three natural pools, formed by the creek’s rapids and waterfalls. These crystal-clear basins are a favorite bathing spot for local youth and adventurous visitors, providing a cool respite on hot days. The surrounding gorge, with its mossy rocks and cascading water, is perfect for a peaceful walk or a picnic.
Access to Krčnik and Kotline is easy by car, bicycle, or on foot, and the area is close to other cultural sites, including the Parish Church of St. George and the Church of St. Margaret. There are no admission fees or set opening hours, making this a freely accessible gem for anyone exploring the Brda hills.
