Mount Rinka (Rinka Peak)

90m waterfall source of the Savinja River

7.4/10
#1 of 6 in Logarska Dolina

Mount Rinka, or Rinka Peak, marks the dramatic terminus of Logarska Dolina in Slovenia’s Kamnik-Savinja Alps. This rugged summit overlooks the Rinka Waterfall, a 90-meter-high dispersed horsetail cascade that plunges over a vertical tectonic limestone wall. The waterfall is not only a visual centerpiece but also the source of the Savinja River, which flows from an ice-cold spring at an elevation of 1,280 meters. The area is characterized by steep, rocky terrain and alpine vegetation, offering a stark contrast to the lush meadows found lower in the valley.

Visitors typically reach the vicinity of the peak and waterfall via a well-maintained path that follows the creek from the valley entrance. The walk takes approximately two to three hours one way, covering a distance of about 7 kilometers along an asphalt road or trail. The route is generally considered easy to moderate, suitable for families and casual hikers, though the final ascent to the waterfall involves some elevation gain. The path provides continuous views of the surrounding mountain chains, including peaks like Strelovec and Ojstrica.

The geological significance of the area is notable, with the limestone formations providing insight into the region’s tectonic history. The Rinka Cirque, where the waterfall is located, serves as a gateway to higher alpine routes, attracting experienced mountaineers. For most visitors, the experience focuses on observing the powerful flow of water and the serene beauty of the glacial landscape. The area is part of a protected landscape park, ensuring the preservation of its natural state. While there is no admission fee for the trail, parking at the valley entrance may incur a charge. The Rinka Peak area offers a peaceful retreat, allowing travelers to appreciate the raw power of nature in one of Slovenia’s most scenic valleys.
