Zagreb
Not in Slovenia: Zagreb is Croatia’s vibrant capital city
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is a city steeped in history and culture, but it is not located in Slovenia. Situated just south of the Slovenian border, Zagreb has long served as a crossroads of Central and Southeastern Europe. Its origins date back to Roman times, but the city as it is known today began to take shape in the Middle Ages, with the establishment of two hilltop settlements: Gradec and Kaptol. These eventually merged to form the historic Upper Town (Gornji Grad), which remains the heart of Zagreb’s old city. Here, visitors can wander narrow cobblestone streets, visit the iconic St. Mark’s Church with its colorful tiled roof, and climb the Lotrščak Tower for panoramic views.
The Lower Town (Donji Grad) contrasts with its grand 19th-century boulevards, parks, and squares. Ban Jelačić Square is the city’s central hub, surrounded by shops, cafes, and the lively Dolac Market, where locals sell fresh produce and flowers. Zagreb is also known for its impressive array of museums, including the Museum of Broken Relationships, the Croatian Museum of Naïve Art, and the Archaeological Museum. The city’s café culture is legendary, with outdoor terraces bustling from morning until late at night.
Zagreb’s main attractions include Tkalčićeva Street, a lively pedestrian thoroughfare lined with bars and restaurants; the Zagreb Cathedral, the tallest building in Croatia; and Maksimir Park, a vast green space perfect for leisurely walks. The city is also a gateway to day trips, including the picturesque Plitvice Lakes National Park, the castles of Hrvatsko Zagorje, and the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, which is just two hours away by train or car.
Getting to Zagreb from Slovenia is straightforward, with regular train and bus connections from Ljubljana and other major Slovenian cities. The journey typically takes two to three hours, making Zagreb an easy addition to a Slovenian itinerary. The city is also served by an international airport with flights across Europe.
Seasonal advice: Zagreb is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is from late spring to early autumn (May to September), when the weather is warm and the city’s parks and outdoor spaces are at their best. Summer brings festivals, open-air concerts, and a lively street scene, while autumn offers colorful foliage and harvest events. Winters can be cold and snowy, but Zagreb’s Advent Christmas market is considered one of the best in Europe, transforming the city into a festive wonderland. While Zagreb is not in Slovenia, its proximity and cultural ties make it a rewarding stop for travelers in the region.
