LJUBLJANA

Ljubljana is the small yet lively capital of Slovenia, where it seems there is always something going on whether it is a festival, street entertainment or live music. With it's picturesque hilltop castle and stunning blend of Baroque and Habsburg architecture, you can't help but be enchanted by this fascinating city.
Ljubljana
At the very heart of the city, you'll find the famous Tromostovje (Triple Bridge) over the Ljubljanica River. The bridges link the north of the city with the old town. Across the river you will find Ljubljana's main Tourist Information Centre - be sure to pick up a free city map to assist with orientation on arrival.

The Ljubljanica River is lined with restaurants and bars and is a great place to relax and watch the world go by. The atmosphere here at night is simply magical.
Ljubljana Old Town
The Old Town (Staro Mesto in Slovene) is characterised by narrow cobbled streets and beautiful Baroque architecture. This is simply the most stunning part of Ljubljana as well as one of the most historically important. Beginning on Mestni trg (Town Square) just a short stroll from the Three Bridges, you'll find Ljubljana's Town Hall and the Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers which is said to represent the merging of the Krka, Sava and Ljubljanica Rivers. Running parallel with the Ljubljanica and under the shadow of the castle, Mestni trg runs into Stari trg where 19th century wooden shopfronts combine with an abundance of street cafes, bars and restaurants.

Ljubljana Market
Also adjacent to the Ljubljanica is the wonderfully colourful Trgnica (open air market) which runs until around 3pm weekdays and Saturdays. Here you'll find an incredible selection of fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers and wicker creations. It is a tradition amongst many locals to head to the market on a Saturday morning. The fountains in the marketplace are well used for washing the fresh fruit. It shouldn't be missed for it's atmosphere alone - even if you don't intend buying. Also along the river is the fish market and at the far end of the market place you'll find Dragon Bridge.
Ljubljana Market
Backing onto the marketplace on Pogačarjev trg is the imposing St Nicholas's Cathedral with it's twin bell towers and dome, complemented by the bronze doors added in 1996 to commemorate Pope John Paul II's visit to Slovenia.
Ljubljana Castle
Take a walk up to the hilltop castle, where you can take in the panoramic views from the top of the tower, watch a 3D presentation about the city's development through history or simply enjoy a drink in the courtyard. For those not feeling so energetic, the tourist train runs (every hour in peak season) between Prešernov Trg (Prešeren Square - next to the Triple Bridge) up to the castle.

The castle is also the venue for various cultural events in the city from concerts to film screenings. Weddings also frequently take place in the castle grounds. Tourist Train in Prešeren Square
