DRIVING IN SLOVENIA
As with most of Europe, in Slovenia you'll need to drive on the right-hand side of the road. There are also several other rules that you'll need to bear in mind - these include:
- by law you must have dipped headlights on at all times
- seat belts are compulsory for both driver and passengers
- children are not permitted to sit in the front seat of the vehicle
- you are not permitted to use a hand-held mobile phone while driving
- you must keep a triangular breakdown sign in your car
- motorcyclists must wear helmets
- if you get stopped by the police, you'll be required to show your documentation, so it's advisable to keep this with you at all times
- winter tyres are mandatory from 15 November through to 15 March. If you have summer tyres on your vehicle within this period, you must carry snow chains in the boot of your car
Speed limits:
Motorways - 130 km/h
Highways - 100 km/h
Main trunk roads - 90 km/h
Urban areas - 50 km/h
Motorway tolls
The main A1 and A2 motorways in Slovenia are subject to tolls (payable in Slovenian Tolars, Euros or by credit card). You'll first collect a ticket and then pay as you leave the motorway.
The ABC System
Drivers who buy an ABC tag (cost of 4000 SIT or just under 17 Euros) along with pre-paid credit and affix the tag to their windscreen are then allowed to use the ABC express lanes at toll booths, at which they are only required to slow to 40km/h - the tag is detected and a screen displays the amount of credit on the tag along with the amount to be deducted for that toll. This provides a quicker route through the toll booths as these vehicles are not required to come to a standstill.
Discounts are offered on the ABC system, as follows: a discount of 5% is offered for pre-paid credit on the tag from 15,000 SIT up to 50,000 SIT and 10% for over 50,000 SIT. (Payment must be made in cash to qualify for these discounts).
